THE CORE SHAMANIC HEALING SERIES

The Way of the Shaman; Shamanic Extraction Healing Training;

Shamanism, Dying, and Beyond; Power Soul Retrieval

Bali, Indonesia: 2~12 October 2023

Shamans are often called “seers” or “people who know” in their tribal languages, because they are involved in a system of knowledge based on firsthand experience. Shamanism is not a belief system. It’s based on personal experiments conducted to heal and to get information. In fact, if shamans don’t get results, they will no longer be used by people in their tribe. People ask me, “How do you know if somebody’s a shaman?” I say, “It’s simple. Do they journey to other worlds? And do they perform miracles?”

—Michael Harner, author, The Way of the Shaman, and Cave & Cosmos

Core Shamanism is the universal or near-universal principles and practices of shamanism not bound to any specific cultural group or perspective, as originated, researched, and developed by Michael Harner. As the modern world overwhelmingly lost its shamanic knowledge centuries ago due to religious and political oppression, the programs in Core Shamanism from The Foundation for Shamanic Studies (FSS) are particularly intended for modern persons to reacquire access to their rightful spiritual heritage through quality workshops and training courses. Training in core shamanism includes teaching students to alter their consciousness through classic shamanic non-drug techniques such as repetitive drumming so that they can discover their own hidden spiritual resources, transform their lives, and learn how to help others.

The Way of the Shaman basic course: 2-3 October 2023

During the Basic experiential workshop, participants are introduced to core shamanism, the universal and near-universal basic methods of the shaman to enter non-ordinary reality for problem solving and healing. Particular emphasis is on the classic shamanic journey, one of the most remarkable visionary methods used by humankind to explore the hidden universe otherwise known mainly through myth and dream. Participants are initiated into shamanic journeying, aided by drumming and other techniques for experiencing the shamanic state of consciousness and for awakening dormant spiritual abilities, including connections with Nature.  Practice includes comparisons by participants of their discoveries in shamanic journeys as well as being introduced to shamanic divination and healing. They are also provided with methods for journeying to meet and study with their own individual spirit helpers in non-ordinary reality, a classic step in shamanic practice. Participants learn how the journey is utilized to restore spiritual power and health, and how shamanism can be applied in contemporary daily life to help heal oneself, others, and the Planet. Two days; 9am-6pm each day.

ADVANCED COURSES (The Way of the Shaman basic course is prerequisite; if you have already taken the basic, you needn’t repeat it and can go directly to these advanced courses)

Shamanic Extraction Healing Training: 5-6 October 2023

Participants are initiated into the extraction method of healing, including how to see, sense, and remove localized illness and pain connected to spiritual factors. This is an important part of shamanic healing training. You will also learn how shamanic practitioners can work in partnership to increase the effectiveness of this work. The Extraction Healing Training workshop is designed exclusively for people who want to bring shamanic healing work into their practice with others. It is not designed for people looking for personal healing.

Shamanism, Dying & Beyond (Psychopomp Training): 8-9 October 2023

Participants explore dying and the destiny of souls from a shamanic perspective. The workshop is both for those who wish to learn for themselves, and for those who wish to help others who are in terminal situations or who have already passed on. Experiences to be undertaken include learning how to become experientially familiar with the after-death realms, tracking a person using shamanic journeying, completing unfinished business, and helping a person to cross over or transition into transcendent realms (classic psychopomp work).

Power Soul Retrieval: 11-12 October 2023

Soul Retrieval is one of the most powerful shamanic healing practices, and so very needed in our world today. We’ll learn to return portions of the soul that may have moved away or dissociated as a result of trauma or any situation in which we were unprepared to feel the associated emotions. Shamans believe that soul loss is a common source of illness, depression, and chronic fatigue, as well as a variety of mental and emotional disorders.  In this advanced course, we will learn how to find and retrieve these portions for clients in a healing session.  **Both Extraction Healing and the Shamanism, Dying & Beyond advanced courses are prerequisite.

The Way of the Shaman basic course: 23-24 October 2023

During the Basic experiential workshop, participants are introduced to core shamanism, the universal and near-universal basic methods of the shaman to enter non-ordinary reality for problem solving and healing. Particular emphasis is on the classic shamanic journey, one of the most remarkable visionary methods used by humankind to explore the hidden universe otherwise known mainly through myth and dream. ADVANCED COURSES (The Way of the Shaman basic course is prerequisite; if you have already taken the basic, you needn’t repeat it and can go directly to these advanced courses)

Shamanism & the Spirits of Nature: 26-27 October 2023

From ancient times, shamans have worked with the spirits of nature for healing, survival, and knowledge. By learning from the plants and animals, from the rocks and mountains, from the winds and waters, and from the sun, moon, and stars, shamans helped their peoples live in harmony with the universe. In a world now out of balance, the way of the shaman can teach how again to respect nature, our Planet, and its inhabitants at a deep spiritual level. As our ancestors everywhere once knew, our survival depends on the survival of the other species. By working together intensively through shamanic journeys and other spiritual experiences, we will dedicate ourselves to working in both non-ordinary and ordinary reality to restore and maintain a living Planet.

Advanced Shamanic Divination: 29-30 October 2023

One of the classic tasks of the shaman is to journey into non-ordinary reality in order to obtain answers to questions, both at the request of others and for oneself. Participants in the workshop have the opportunity to engage in divination journeys for each other as well as for themselves and to gain experience in using various time-tested shamanic divination techniques. In the shamanic search to become persons of knowledge, they learn, as shamans have from time immemorial, how to converse with plant and animal spirits, how to learn about the use of quartz crystals, and how to seek and receive revelatory knowledge from visionary sources.

Shamanic Dreamwork: 1-2 November 2023

In this unique experiential workshop you will have the opportunity to explore the nature, meaning, and use of dreams among shamanic peoples, with dreamwork practices from a range of cultures. Researched and developed by Michael Harner, subjects to be covered include shamanic dream theory and big dreams, as well as dreams and the soul, spirits, shamanic journeys, the Dreamtime, and the vision quest. You will have the opportunity to apply the knowledge to contemporary life, including the use of dreams in divination, health, and healing. *(This course works with dreams shamanically,. We’ll work primarily with dreams you have had, and train to work with ones you will have in the future; it is not a how-to-remember-your-dreams program, though memory may improve during and after the course).

“The Three-Year Program has changed my life on a cellular level. It has been the best experience of my life!”

Originated by Michael Harner and based upon his decades of research and experimentation, this course is the most advanced training in shamanism and shamanic healing offered by The Foundation for Shamanic Studies. It is widely considered as unparalleled in the world. It involves intensive extended training in progressively higher levels of very advanced shamanism, including initiations into rare and little-known practices and principles.

“I love my life now. Since I’ve been doing this work, I have a deep sense of my purpose on this planet. That is not something I thought I would ever have. My life is deep, purposeful, profound and fun!”  ~Three-Year Program Participant

In this residential program the same group of participants meets for 12 days each year (Early July 2024~2026) in Bali, with practical assignments between meetings. The program is devoted to advancing the participants’ knowledge and practice as far as possible during the three sessions. Enrollment is limited and requires a two-step application/ acceptance procedure. Sessions are held at a retreat center; on-site lodging and meals will be arranged during registration. *This program is entirely new material and does not repeat nor review 2-day course material. We recommend completing 4~7 two-day courses to know if you’re truly interested in committing to this 6-week program. *(This is shamanic practitioner development program of initiations, not a teacher-training program).

PREREQUISITES: The FSS basic Way of the Shaman course, Shamanic Extraction Healing Training, and at least two other advanced FSS two-day workshops of your choice. OR 7 online FSS courses, though we recommend more 2-day courses and some practice before committing to this 36-day program.

Sky Shamans of Mongolia: Meetings with Remarkable Healers

Sky Shamans cover & back

Praise for Sky Shamans of Mongolia

Sky Shamans of Mongolia is a fascinating and serious work that is an important contribution to shamanic knowledge. A must–read for anyone wishing to learn about Mongolian shamanism and to understand its place in the world.”  —Michael Harner, PhD, author of The Way of the Shaman and Cave and Cosmos: Shamanic Encounters with Another Reality

“As one who has worked and taught alongside Mongolian shamans, I find this book by Kevin Turner has illuminated much about this stunningly powerful and mysterious form of shamanism. He shares what he has learned firsthand, and he frames it in a rich context of multiple dimensions of shamanism, including neuroscience, and rolls it into a vision of shamanism as personal evolution with a vision of the future. Read this book!” —C. Michael Smith, PhD, clinical psychologist and author of Jung and Shamanism in Dialogue and Psychotherapy and the Sacred

cv

“Kevin Turner’s marvelous fieldwork describes shamanism and shamanic knowledge as it really is in Mongolia.” —Luvsanjav Chuluunbaatar, PhD, professor of linguistics at National University of Mongolia

“Kevin Turner’s Sky Shamans of Mongolia covers a subject few authors have investigated in depth. In this wonderful and well-written text, Turner explores shamanism in the kind of detail only an initiate could communicate. Not only does Turner speak to the cultural role of shamans, but he reveals the experiential cosmos in which they journey. I recommend this book for anyone interested in Asian shamanism.”
Larry Peters, PhD, author of Tibetan Shamanism: Ecstasy and Healing

“Turner’s unique qualifications make this book an immensely valuable resource
for Westerners interested in Mongolian shamanism, or shamanism wherever
practiced. An American living in Asia, speaking several Asian tongues, himself
a shamanic practitioner, Turner possesses not only the gift of understanding
but the gift of putting that understanding into clear, readable language. Unlike
academics attempting to describe shamanism from the outside, Turner knows
it from the inside, and the same familiarity that gained him the confidence of
the shamans enables him to be a sure-footed interpreter for the reader.”
Frank DeMarco, author of The Sphere and the Hologram

“A fascinating and compelling account of contemporary shamanic practice, based
on firsthand experience and simultaneously an exercise in religious anthropology
and cultural ethnography, this work explores a sacred tradition whose deep impact
on the West is gradually being rediscovered and interpreted anew.”
Paul Bishop, PhD, author of The Archaic: The Past in the Present

“Kevin Turner is an explorer of the inner worlds, a researcher of the deep meaning
of life. His book, in addition to being an anthropological text, is also a travel
story, full of surprises, between blue skies and green landscapes without boundaries,
the songs and costumes of the shamans, their miraculous healings and
visions, and the sterile discussions among academic scholars described with
fine irony. [A] trip to real but extraordinary experiences.”
Guido Ferrari, journalist and director of Tao: The Watercourse Way at Wu Yi Mountain

“Kevin Turner brings a rare combination of skills and tools to the table, which
in Mongolia opened doors and hearts normally closed to Western researchers
of shamanism. He is a linguist, a teacher, and a practicing shaman. As a Western
shaman, he had to endure much skeptical probing before being accepted
by the Mongolian shamanic community and invited to their gatherings and
healing ceremonies. Writing Sky Shamans of Mongolia from the perspective
of a shamanic practitioner himself, Kevin Turner offers his readers a rare in-depth
overview of the history and current practices of Mongolian shamanism,
which after a period of persecution and decline is experiencing a revival of
astonishing proportions.”
Sabine Lucas, PhD, Jungian analyst and author of Past Life Dreamwork

“Sky Shamans of Mongolia provides authoritative and extensive coverage of a little-known tradition. The writer’s personal encounters enliven the account, furthered by his position as a practitioner of ‘universal shamanism’ which enables
him to enjoy privileged access. There are moments when the reader is so drawn in
by the firsthand descriptions that it feels as if one were actually there.”
John Dougill, author of Shinto Shrines: A Guide to the Sacred Sites of Japan’s Ancient Religion

“The dramatic resurgence of shamanism in Mongolia, as detailed in this beautifully written study, is testament to the indomitable nature of the soul’s healing powers. Kevin Turner gives us both a window into shamanism as a worldwide phenomenon and a detailed account of ancestral Mongolian shamanic practices. Most interesting of all, Sky Shamans is that rare glimpse into the shamanic psyche, transmitted through these accounts.”
Jeremiah Abrams, author of Meeting the Shadow: The Hidden Power of the Dark Side of Human Nature

“An enjoyably written introduction to Mongolian and Inner Asian shamanisms
that is based in experience and filled with knowledge. Recommended.”
Jeremy Narby, author of Shamans through Time and The Cosmic Serpent

“Author Kevin Turner has brought something of great importance to those
seeking to understand and practice shamanism: a valuable contribution to the
understanding and practice of shamanism in the West and a richly rewarding,
fascinating study of Mongolian shamanism. The author’s adventures in the
land of the shamans brings much food for thought and great insight.”
—Nicholas Breeze Wood, editor of Sacred Hoop magazine

Soul Retrieval is one of the most powerful shamanic healing practices. It aims to return portions of the soul that may have moved away from us as a result of trauma or any situation in which we were unprepared to feel the associated emotions. Shamans believe that soul loss is a common source of illness, depression, and chronic fatigue, as well as a variety of mental and emotional disorders.  In this advanced course, we will learn how to find and retrieve these portions for clients in a healing session. **Extraction Healing  and the Shamanism, Dying and Beyond advanced courses are prerequisites for this course.

“The shaman’s arduous routines and the ceaseless demands of their communities have led some Western observers to wonder why anyone would want to shamanize…. What the outsiders miss, not having experiential knowledge of shamanism, is the great spiritual joy and ecstasy one commonly experiences working with the spirits and helping others who are suffering or in pain.”

SHAMANISM IN MONGOLIA HELPS TO REWRITE HISTORY
Manduhai Buyandelger, author of Tragic Spirits and an anthropologist from MIT, finds that after Soviet domination, a rebirth of shamanism helped Mongolia rewrite its own history. Read the article by Peter Dizikes, MIT News Office. Submitted by Michael Oddo, FSS Three Year graduate, Columbus, Ohio.
SOUL RETRIEVAL BY CURANDEROS  View a video with a 1-2 minute description of soul retrieval done by curanderos for “susto” (fright). This is part of a TED talk, “Connecting Modern Medicine to Traditional Healing,” by Cheo Torres, a professor at University of New Mexico, who runs a cross-cultural shamanic event there every summer. In the practice, in the presence of family, friends and neighbors for support, they sweep the patient’s body with rue, basil and rosemary three times a week for one month on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday, asking the patient’s spirit to return. Cheo says it worked to cure his cousin, suffering with PTSD from Viet Nam. View the video (for the soul retrieval segment, start watching the video at about 5:20 minutes in). Submitted by Ellen Winner, FSS Three-Year graduate and faculty member, Boulder, Colorado.

Healing Words

GRANDMOTHER SAKI
Psychiatrist Dr. Rieko Hagihara reports from Japan that respected Ainu Elder Grandma Saki has not only recovered from her illness but is even healthier and more powerful than she was before her illness. Grandma Saki collapsed while visiting Tokyo from Hokkaido last year, and she was diagnosed with a cancerous tumor. There was great concern among the Ainu community as she is one of the last Ainu myth-song keepers, and she had no students interested in inheriting her tradition. The Ainu in her region of Hokkaido, the northern island of Japan, prayed continuously for her recovery, and her eldest son even flew to Tokyo to bring her an Ainu spirit carving. Nevertheless, she showed no improvement, and spent months back and forth from death’s door.

Dr. Hagihara invited FSS Director for Asia Kevin Turner to accompany her to the hospital to visit Saki on November 4, after completing a Way of the Shaman basic course in Tokyo. Her worried family led them into the hospice room.

Kevin explains:

“Saki was very weak and only partially conscious when we arrived. She was in a room with several other patients of advanced age, few of whom were expected to survive. I sensed ancestor spirits about, perhaps waiting on her departure. I was inspired to offer a healing to make the eventual transition easier. Saki gave her approval. There, in midst of the doctors, nurses, and other patients, I shook my rattles, sang an invocation song, and performed a gentle extraction. Divining no further course of action, I felt compelled to simply pass healing power to her. An unfamiliar cool and gentle rush of power flowed from behind, through my arms, and into her shoulders. Saki gently swooned into a restful sleep.”

Two days later Grandma Saki’s relatives telephoned Dr. Hagihara to report that upon awakening the next morning, Saki exploded at a nurse, I’m Ainu and I will not be defeated! Saki then told her family that she had dreamt of her (deceased) husband chanting sutras, and of fighting against the shamo (the Ainu derogatory word for the Japanese). A new specialist doctor arrived shortly later, and found her condition to be completely benign. Saki dramatically improved throughout the day, and was released from the hospital the following day, much to the surprise of all. Grandma Saki has no memory of the healing, nor even of Dr. Hagihara and Kevin visiting, but gave her blessing to report this. Her doctors can only attribute her recovery to initial misdiagnosis.

In March this year, Dr. Hagihara visited Grandma Saki in Hokkaido with an Okinawan medium (kaminchu). The kaminchu divined, Saki’s mission is to teach the next generation how to live. Saki now has five young students that she teaches at monthly meetings with elders (fuchi). She calls her helping and protective spirits regularly, and always gives prayers to the mountain spirits before searching for mushrooms. She explains to plants that she needs them for food and medicine and asks permission before cutting. Dr. Hagihara learned to weave spirit offering baskets from her, and is learning to make preserved Ainu foods. She also gave Grandma Saki some blue corn from the Hopi in Arizona, which she was able to sprout and grow herself in Japan (see photo above).

It remains unclear what led to the Ainu elder’s miraculous recovery, but it is Kevin’s opinion that Ainu Helping Spirits wish Grandma Saki to stay in this world until she passes her knowledge to the next generation, and that he was probably only a coincidental intermediary for the healing to occur.

ABOUT THE FOUNDATION

Internationally renowned anthropologist Michael Harner pioneered the return of shamanism and the shamanic journey to contemporary life. In 1979, Michael and Sandra Harner established the Center for Shamanic Studies, the precursor to the Foundation for Shamanic Studies, which took over the function of the Center in the mid-eighties. FSS is dedicated to the preservation, study, and teaching of shamanic knowledge for the benefit of the Planet and its inhabitants. Join the thousands of people each year who take the Foundation’s rigorous training in Core Shamanism, which consists of the universal, near-universal, and common features of shamanism, together with journeys to other worlds, a distinguishing feature of shamanism. Originated, researched, and developed by Michael Harner, the principles of core shamanism are not bound to any specific cultural group or perspective.  The workshops and training programs have been carefully developed by Dr. Harner and thoroughly tested to provide an authentic shamanic experience and practical results.

Core Soul Retrieval: June 15-16, 2013, Kyoto

Core Soul Retrieval Training™

15~16 June 2013: Kyoto, Japan

The Foundation is pleased to announce that beginning in 2013, the FSS will offer a new advanced weekend workshop in Core Soul Retrieval Training developed by Michael Harner.

Soul Retrieval is one of the most powerful shamanic healing practices. It aims to return portions of the soul that may have left us due to any situation in which we were unprepared to feel the associated emotions. Shamans believe that soul loss is a common source of illness, depression, and chronic fatigue, as well as a variety of mental and emotional disorders.  In this advanced course, we will learn how to find and retrieve these portions for clients in a healing session.

We are the fortunate heirs of a great and venerable spiritual tradition, shamanism, many thousands of years old, with core principles and practices that are universal or common for one simple reason: they work. Among them is soul retrieval, found widely in shamanic cultures.

Dr. Harner learned how to do soul retrieval in 1961 while living among the Amazonian Conibo and brought it to the West. The Conibo taught him that every part of a person had its own soul, and that soul retrieval could be done for any portion of the person that had been injured or traumatized. In The Way of the Shaman (pages 71 – 72, 93, 99), he wrote of recovering “vital souls” to heal comatose persons and persons suffering from traumas, noting that this method can also be used “to heal patients by retrieving lost portions of their vital souls.”

Michael began training students in soul retrieval at least as early as June 25 – 27, 1982, as part of an Intermediate Workshop (no longer existing under that name) inside a cave in Grottoes, Virginia. Among the 31 students in that memorable location was Dana Robinson, now a longtime FSS faculty member, who recalls:

“In Grottoes, we did a considerable amount of shamanic work inside a large cave that we walked into a couple of times each day. During one session in the cave, you taught us a soul retrieval technique, and we helped a young man who had spent some time in a mental institution years before.I remember other events from that weekend 30 years ago, but the soul retrieval journey, the beauty of that cave, and the great teacher that we had stand out the most in my memory.”

The training in core soul retrieval to be offered by the Foundation is based on principles and methods that have been used successfully not just by the Conibo, but cross-culturally. Core soul retrieval is a shamanic healing method and does not involve the addition of Western psychological practices.

Singapore: Way of the Shaman, Oct 5-6, 2013

The Way of the Shaman: Shamanic Journeying, Healing, and Power

5-6 October 2013,  SINGAPORE

The Basic Workshop in Core Shamanism from The Foundation for Shamanic Studies

Course design by Michael Harner. Instructor: Kevin Turner, Director for Asia, The Foundation for Shamanic Studies.

Course fee: S$525. ** Early bird registration and payment by Sept 5: S$490!

Location: Wessex Estate at Portsdown Road (MRT stations Commonwealth, or One North).  Course times: Saturday & Sunday, 9:30am~6:30pm.
